A blazing write speed may not improve performance in many situations. This is because Vista watches which applications you use most frequently and caches them well in advance.
The devices are ranked by their ReadyBoost performance. The best of each type is Rank #1 and marked in bold.
Thank you to everyone for their contributions!
Hi, Everyone, who interested on ReadyBoost scores,
I’ve wonder why any configuration using CF2IDE / CF2SATA with high-speed CF, such as Sandisk’s Extreme III/IV series.
http://www.dansdata.com/cfide.htm
http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/08/18/accelerated_compact_flash/
Sandisk’s Extreme series claims R/W speeds as more than 20MB/s (III), 40MB/s (IV) and they supports UDMA modes for high-speeds as noted on OEM manuals.
http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/File/OEM/Manuals/OEMCFlashPMv12.0.pdf
Most USB2.0/Firewire/PC-Card CF readers use PIO4 modes which bounds to 16.7MB/s theoratically and PIO requires high processing power of CPU in card-readers thus real figure is lower than expected.
Since flash has almost no access time for moving heads like magnetic disk theoratically, sequential R/W and random R/W performance may be show slight differences.
If we connect CF cards via CF2IDE / CF2SATA, at this time, efficeny of TRUEIDE mode implmentation on CF cards mainly affect to make bigger this differences.
Is there anyone who valunteer this ReadyBosst tests on various CF cards?
Sincerely,

The latency of 0.2 ms for the SATA-CF adapter is outstanding.
Additional real world speed testing can be found at http://www.hjreggel.net/cardspeed/speed-by-cards-cfh.html . Many types of flash devices are listed but only sequential read and write test results are available which are not directly relevant to ReadyBoost.
14 April 2007 @ 1:19 amThe Transcend TS4GSDHC6 listed above is actually the Transcend TS4GSD150 and is not a SDHC card
Someone reported my results after I posted them on the tabletpcreview.com forum
18 April 2007 @ 8:29 amUsing CF-IDE results good results of RRead 6383KB/s and RWrite 8480KB/s on my P3-1Ghz machine having only 768MB memory.
The values are outstanding with compared to the results of the same CF cards connected on other method of USB, Firewire, …
To enable ReadyBoost tab on PATA/SATA drive, you need to use ‘ReadyBoostFileGen.exe’ on ReadyBoostKit at the following URL.
https://microsoft.mrmpslc.com/windowsvistapartner/resources/ReadyBoostKit.zip
Simply type ‘ReadyBoostFileGen.exe -w 1′,
25 April 2007 @ 5:40 amReboot the machine, then, enable readyboost feature on this drive’s ‘ReadyBoost’ tab.
Older laptops without an onboard USB 2.0 interface can *try* using thier PCMCIA port with a USB 2.0 adapter to get ReadyBoost to function - BUT - your read speeds may not cut it. Here is my test:
I tested a 4gig SanDisk Cruzer Micro w/U3 on a Dell Inspiron 2650 (ostensibly, the older system this kind of technology was designed for) running Vista Ultimate with 512 megs of ram. Vista runs find on the machine with a paging file set to 1024 (min) and 4096 (max) hard configured and not set to system managed. I was looking for the “enhanced” performance of the ReadyBoost, but it would not work through the Buslink 4 port USB 2.0 pcmcia card adapter that I have - model UII-CB4 (USB 2.0 Cardbus). The adapter finds the 4 gig USB drive, can read it fine, I can write to it fine and even format it, yet the read / write speeds through it are atrocious. I would only register a read speed of approx 1918 and would not even report a write speed.
On an HP P4/3.4ghz desktop machine (xw4300) with 2 gigs of ram running Vista with a user rating of 3.6 it registers the SanDisk 4 gig USB flash drive immediately, recommends 3.8+ gigs of cache and formats it for use within 3 seconds! Is there a noticeable performance boost? Not at all. If anything the OS experience seems a little edgier, in that windows open up a bit more snappy. The only performance gain here will be when running many apps at once, yet memory hog Outlook 2007 did not run noticeably faster.
The real issue here is that this technology is allegedly intended to speed up machines that are limited in ram and performance abilities when running Vista. My Dell Inspiron 2650 is the IDEAL candidate for that. I would love to be able to use this feature yet apparently cannot. Since I do not have USB 2.0 built into this machine natively I must use a pcmcia cardbus adapter (ie) the Buslink mentioned above, and while it runs all of my other USB 2.0 devices including my DVDRW drive fantasticly well, it will not report usable throughput for ReadyBoost - yet - that same 4gig stick of SanDisk USB flash memory performs mighty well on a machine that doesn’t really need the help.
Something seems upside down in all of this..
The pcmcia cardbus adapter is the bottleneck, I will try another one, but I have little enthusiasm for this technology anymore. Obviously if I wanted a newer machine I would get a 64 bit motherboard and run 8 gigs of ram on it. Where is the advantage of this technology if it does not help the little man?
31 May 2007 @ 11:49 ami got a new lexar 4 gig platnum II card and it came with a reader in the box. when i plugged in my old “a data speedy”(#2in sd) card it read at 5meg read 3 meg write. it was a free cheapie with my camera! when i plugged in the same card into my hp 710 printer it would fail ready boost benchmarks saying it would only do about 1 meg a sec read. if your having trouble getting readyboost to work or are not getting the performance you should, try a different reader.
ps has anyone thought to try a raid array with these? lol
26 July 2007 @ 11:34 amIt would be nice if there was a cardbus adaptor that could take CF to be able to use readyboost where all the extra hardware can be inside the laptop and not stick out. (SD would be ok too but if CF is faster then would rather use that)
10 September 2007 @ 8:46 amThat is it, i would like a solution where it does not stick out. A SD card and a pcmcia adapter, is that posible and fast enoug to be worth while`?
12 January 2008 @ 8:14 amPNY XLR8 4GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) Model P-FD4GBXLR8-FS is the fastest Ready Boost Thumb Drive tested here :

The result for Transcend’s ts4gusdhc6 (a “class 6″ 4GB microSDHC card) was obtained in the internal SD card reader of a Dell vostro laptop. winsat figures came to:
7.08MB/s random read; and
5.21MB/s random write
Very interesting articles - thanks all!
3 July 2008 @ 10:50 pmThis is an excellent resource. Thanks for putting it together!
It would also be good to capture the data about the PC-card CF adapters people are using; and possibly motherboard chipset.
On my Thinkpad T42, no speed is reported for my RiData Lighting Series 233x 8GB CF card when plugged in via a Delkin ‘eFilm Pro’ Cardbus Adapter. Eventlog says: “The device (Unknown Unknown) will not be used for a ReadyBoost cache because it is not attached to a supported interface.”
Yet winsat reports the following:
Read: 8.46 MB/s (winsat disk –read –ran –ransize 4096 –drive F -v)
Write: 5.01 MB/s (winsat disk –write –ran –ransize 524288 –drive F -v)
I also have an “Ambicom” CF adapter, but it too gives the ‘not attached to supported interface’ eventlog result.
So at this point I don’t know where to place the blame. Should I get a different CF adapter (and if so, which one?), or just accept that my T42 cannot do ReadyBoost via CF? Like others have noted, I don’t want a USB key hanging off the side of the laptop.
1 August 2008 @ 5:46 pmI’ve read many articles recently to setup a readyboost card reader system!
my finding is this:
1. PCMIA 1.5m/s is too slow for any thing! even for CF card reading, no mention readyboost!
2. Carbus is fast (Deklin cardbus 32 UDMA can achieve 60m/s), but this interface is not supported by vista. as of Mar 2009
3. The best Solution:
AFT PROExpress-7 ExpressCard Reader
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16839176001
support sdhc, and Vista readyboost!
speed is the same as usb2.0, at 19m/s!
many guy worked this out on Thinkpad so far
14 March 2009 @ 6:39 amBloody…. just added 4gb and 8gb IPSG SDHC to the SD list instead of the SDHC list. Whoops. :/
22 May 2009 @ 10:47 amI’m using a Viking 32 bit 5 in 1 cardbus adapter for ReadyBoost. Looks like Windows 7 supports cardbus devices for ReadyBoost.
